EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS MEETING

Rizal Gov. Rebecca Ynares, as Chairperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), convened recently city/municipal mayors, city/municipal engineers, local disaster risk reduction and management officers and other stakeholders in a meeting to discuss preparedness plan in the event of a movement of the West Valley Fault System cutting across Bulacan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Laguna, and Cavite and which could trigger a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. OCD Region 4-A Director Vicente Tomazar, Phivolcs Sr. Science Research Specialist Kathleen Papiona, and BFP Rizal Fire Marshal Andrew Mendova presented technical data and discussed with the province’s local officials the worst case scenarios after the quake and the mitigating interventions that should be done before, during and after the “Big One”. The Rizal Province’s meeting was the first one conducted in the Calabarzon Region according to the Office of the Civil Defense.
